| | The Sucker Moon (Namebini-giizis) teachings In Anishinaabe teachings, the Grandmother Moon guides us, offering seasonal teachings rooted in care, balance, and relationships. These teachings will guide us throughout the year. As we move deeper into spring and bid the winter wind farewell, we welcome the Sucker Moon (Namebini-giizis). This fourth moon of the year represents a time of renewal; when the suckerfish journeys to the Spirit World to receive cleansing teachings. When the suckerfish returns, it purifies the water and creates a path for the spirits. In this same spirit of renewal, our colleagues at Anishnawbe Health Toronto work daily to clear a path of healing for the community. For them, renewal isn't just a season; it is a year-round commitment rooted in the vision of Two-Eyed Seeing. This approach allows staff to look through one eye with the strengths of Indigenous Knowledge and through the other with the strengths of Western Medicine. By using this balanced line of sight, they see the whole person sitting before them, acknowledging their spirit, mind, and body. This month, we invite you to reflect on what renewal looks like to you and how we can work together to nourish a healthier, more vibrant community where every individual has a clear path towards a new beginning. | Impact at a Glance Healing the Whole Circle: Why Wrap around Support Matters Standard healthcare often focuses only on the physical body. In contrast, Indigenous health is rooted in the vital balance of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. At Anishnawbe Health Toronto (AHT) they move beyond the standard model to ensure no one is left behind. The power of AHT’s model is in its seamless integration; a community member may visit the dental clinic for a checkup and then continue just a few steps down the hall to sit with a Traditional Healer. This isn't just convenience; it is a Two Eyed seeing approach that treats the whole being and supports a journey back to balance. The Impact: Beyond basic clinical costs covered by government funding, donor support empowers the Foundation to fund the other services that are also essentials. These services bridge the gaps in the provincial health system, supporting Indigenous resurgence and sovereignty over healthcare in Toronto. |
