Remembering Joe Hester

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Joe Hester, Executive Director of Anishnawbe Health Toronto. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Joe’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by his vision and leadership.

Joe Hester dedicated his life to advancing Indigenous sovereignty over health care for the urban Indigenous community. Under his leadership, Anishnawbe Health Toronto grew from its early roots to become a gold standard of culturally appropriate care that it is known as today. Joe’s passion and tenacity ensured that Traditional Healing remains at the heart of health and wellness services for Indigenous people in Toronto. His mantra, “No one will be left behind,” guided his efforts to blend Traditional and Western medicine.

One of Joe’s greatest legacies is the Indigenous Hub in the Canary District, that includes the new home to Anishnawbe Health Toronto. For over 23 years, Joe worked to create a permanent space for Indigenous health, employment, and community services in Toronto. The completion of the new home of Anishnawbe Health Toronto in spring 2025 stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication and vision. This space will continue to serve the community for generations, honoring Joe’s dream of culturally rooted care and healing.

Beyond Anishnawbe Health Toronto, Joe’s influence extended across the Indigenous health landscape. He served as an advisor to the Toronto Indigenous Health Advisory Circle, the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network, and Toronto Public Health. His advocacy ensured that Indigenous voices were at the forefront of shaping health policy and services.

Joe’s impact on health care for the urban Indigenous community is immeasurable, and his passing is a profound loss. His passion and commitment will continue to guide AHF as we build upon the strong foundations he laid for reconciliation.

It is through your generosity that we can continue to support the vital work that Anishnawbe Health Toronto does day in, day out, which Joe so passionately championed.

If you feel called to, we welcome you to make a donation in Joe’s honour.
